April 12, 2021

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, both the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the state Franchise Tax Board (FTB) extended the deadlines for individual taxpayers to file their 2020 income tax returns and pay their 2020 taxes to May 17, 2021. This postponement applies to individual filers whose 2020 tax returns and payments were originally due on April 15, 2021. This relief does not apply to quarterly estimated tax payments that are due on April 15, 2021. These payments are still due on April 15.

Taxes paid by individuals by the May 17, 2021 deadline will not accrue any late fees or penalties. Taxpayers do not need to claim any special treatment or call the IRS or FTB to qualify for this postponement. However, the IRS and FTB highly encourage taxpayers to file as soon as possible to get their tax refunds sooner.
